Human nature is bad — that is why there is learning”: Confucianism’s realist
The age they lived in
The last Warring States years, crueler still than Mencius’s age, with Qin’s unification looming. Thrice head of the Jixia Academy — the era’s great state think-tank where all the Hundred Schools debated — Xunzi reforged Confucian ideals in the language of reality. That Han Feizi and Li Si, the First Emperor’s chancellor, came from his school says where he stood: on the border between Confucianism and Legalism.
In their words — and in plain words
Human nature is bad; what is good in people is artifice." — Xunzi, “Human Nature Is Bad”
It sounds bleak, but wei means not “fake” but “human-made.” Left to nature, desires collide into strife; goodness is therefore an achievement — crafted by teachers, ritual, and study, as bent wood is straightened on a frame. Mencius would water the sprout; Xunzi would press the warped timber. Inverted, this is not pessimism but the strongest optimism about education: anyone in the street, he wrote, can become a sage by learning. Not birth but effort makes the person.
A philosophy made by a life
It is no accident that the Xunzi opens with “An Exhortation to Learning” — “learning must never cease” — and the famous image that blue dye drawn from the indigo plant is bluer than the plant: learning surpasses nature. His realism peaks with Heaven: it has no will, only constancy — rain does not come because we pray; “we pray, and it rains when it rains.” Build dikes instead of trembling at eclipses: the most disenchanted view of nature among the Hundred Schools. Yet he would not abolish ritual — rites are not technology for moving Heaven but cultural form shaping the hearts of the living, anticipating sociology’s insight by two millennia. So too with li: if desires cannot be erased, they must be cultivated and apportioned by institutions — Confucius’s ritual becoming a language of social design. History’s irony came after his death: as his students’ Legalism powered Qin’s unification, Confucian orthodoxy cast Xunzi out as the heretic who spawned it, and he wandered outside the temple for over a millennium. Yet the actual skeleton of imperial Confucianism — its schools, rites, and textual transmission — is closer to his blueprint than to Mencius’s. An architect whose name was erased while his drawings were used. And the quarrel he opened — is our nature good or bad? — psychology and education are still fighting today.

What made the you of today — inborn nature, or the artifice of learning and effort? In what proportion?
