1879: the year the mind entered a laboratory — the first violet light of psychology on this map

The age they lived in

Late nineteenth-century Germany, physiology's golden age: Helmholtz had actually measured the speed of nerve signals (tens of meters per second, against the assumption of instantaneity). If the body's processes could be measured, why not the mind's? For millennia the mind had been philosophy's territory — explored from the armchair, Socrates to Kant; Kant had even declared psychology could never be an experimental science. When Wundt, once Helmholtz's assistant, installed instruments in a small Leipzig room in 1879, it was a working refutation — the moment the violet in this map's legend, asleep and faded until now, switches on.

In their words — and in plain words

— 분트, 『생리심리학 강요』의 기획 (요지)"The task of psychology: to analyze conscious processes into their elements, and to discover the laws governing their combination." — after Wundt's Principles of Physiological Psychology
As chemistry decomposes matter into elements, consciousness would be decomposed into elements — sensations, feelings — and the laws of their combination sought: the mind treated not as mystery but as analyzable nature. The method: controlled introspection, trained observers, stimuli, reaction times clocked to the thousandth of a second. The moment the speed of thought was measured, the mind moved from philosophy's armchair to the laboratory bench.

A philosophy made by a life

That small room became world psychology's delivery ward: much of America's first generation of psychologists, and pioneers from across Europe, Russia, and Japan, passed through Leipzig and went home to found laboratories of their own — the discipline's world map drawn radially from a single room. Wundt himself was far broader than the textbook summary: across nearly sixty thousand pages he distinguished what experiment can measure (sensation, reaction) from what it cannot, insisting that higher processes — language, myth, custom — must be studied through history and community, and gave his last decades to the ten-volume Völkerpsychologie. The founder of experimental psychology was thus also the first critic of experimental imperialism. His method of introspection was soon attacked and discarded; behaviorism, psychoanalysis, and cognitive science would fight over the succession — but Wundt built the arena in which all those battles were fought. For this atlas, the violet dot carries a special meaning: the question that began with "know thyself" put on a lab coat after 2,300 years — the scene of science's departure from philosophy's house, and the junction where this map meets the Science Atlas.

The questions they asked

Can the mind be measured?
Is the self that observes the mind the same as the mind observed?
Does what cannot be measured lie outside science?
In your own mind — where do you draw the line between what can be measured and what never will be?
