Reason has no sex" — extending the Enlightenment's promise to half of humanity

The age they lived in

The age of the French Revolution — "men are born free and equal" was shaking Europe. But "men" did not include women: not in revolutionary France's Declaration, not in Rousseau's pedagogy, which cast women as beings made to please men rather than citizens of reason. Raised watching a violent father, surviving through the few trades open to women until her pen made her independent — one of the era's rare self-supporting women writers — Wollstonecraft turned the revolution's own logic against the revolutionaries.

In their words — and in plain words

I do not wish them to have power over men; but over themselves." — A Vindication of the Rights of Woman
The demand is not power over others but over oneself — and the logic is simple, hence devastating. If the Enlightenment's premise is that virtue flows from reason, and women possess reason, then raising women in ignorance manufactures their vices. If women seem frivolous, it is training, not nature — do not blame a caged bird for not flying. The single prescription: the same education.

A philosophy made by a life

The Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792) followed her Vindication of the Rights of Men against Burke — the theorists of human rights had omitted half of humanity. She was no armchair theorist: she crossed to Paris during the Terror to see the revolution firsthand, recording both its ideals and its violence as acquaintances went to the guillotine, and her solo Scandinavian travelogue became a bestseller. In love she was twice abandoned and twice attempted suicide — posterity long mocked the apostle of reason drowning in feeling, but read now it is honesty: she never denied emotion, only insisted it be educated alongside reason. Late happiness with William Godwin was brief: she died of childbed fever ten days after bearing a daughter — who grew up to write Frankenstein. A well-meant candid memoir by her widower became a scandal that buried her name for a century as a "fallen woman," until the suffragists took her up again. Her whole life measures how far a thought can outrun its time — and what that costs.

The questions they asked

Does reason have a sex?
How much of what we call "nature" is the product of training?
Do declarations of the universal really include everyone?
Of the things called "just the way it is" today — which are cages mistaken for nature?
