Western Philosophy

He overturned philosophy twice — the second time, his own
The age they lived in
Youngest son of one of Europe's richest families — a Viennese steel dynasty where three brothers died by suicide and Brahms visited the salon. Detouring from aeronautics into the foundations of mathematics, he sought out Russell, then volunteered for the Austrian army and finished the Tractatus in front-line trenches and a POW camp. Declaring philosophy's problems solved, he gave away his entire fortune and became a village schoolteacher — if philosophy was finished, there was no reason to live as a philosopher.
In their words — and in plain words
Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent." — Tractatus 7
The book's final sentence and its entire seventh proposition. If language works by picturing facts, then what is not a fact — ethics, God, the meaning of life — cannot be caught in its net. The point often missed: he never said these things are nonexistent or trivial. The truly important, he held, cannot be said, only shown — "the point of the book is ethical," he wrote to a publisher. The silence is not dismissal but a form of reverence.
The meaning of a word is its use in the language." — the central formula of the Philosophical Investigations
A frontal refutation of his younger self: language is not one picture mirroring the world but countless games played within a life — commanding, joking, praying, greeting, each with different rules — and a word's meaning comes from its use in the game, not from a dictionary. Philosophical puzzles arise mostly from applying one game's grammar to another; philosophy's job is not building theories but "showing the fly the way out of the fly-bottle."
A philosophy made by a life
Schoolteaching failed (he resigned over corporal punishment); he drifted — monastery gardener, architect of his sister's mansion (a year on a door handle) — and returned to Cambridge in 1929. Keynes wrote to a friend: "God has arrived. I met him on the 5.15 train." At the viva where the Tractatus earned his doctorate, he reportedly patted his examiners — Russell and Moore — on the shoulder: "Don't worry, I know you'll never understand it." Then he stopped understanding it himself: as the picture theory cracked, he spent twenty years dissecting his own book's errors in the lecture room — the self-refutation posthumously published as the Philosophical Investigations. One philosopher launching twentieth-century philosophy twice, with two opposed masterpieces, is without precedent. He despised professional philosophy, urged students into "honest work" — medicine, labor — and left his own chair during the war to work as a hospital porter. Dying of cancer in 1951, his last words: "Tell them I've had a wonderful life." From a man who had crossed three brothers' suicides and a lifetime of darkness, no sentence is larger.
The questions they asked
Are the limits of language the limits of the world?
How is the unsayable-but-important conveyed?
Are philosophical problems discovered — or manufactured by confusions of language?
That recent argument of yours — were you and the other side playing the same word by different games' rules?
