The age they lived in
He spent much of his life fleeing creditors. He crossed a border illegally at Riga; a storm on the passage to London became The Flying Dutchman. He joined the Dresden uprising of 1849, was wanted by police, and spent twelve years exiled in Switzerland. He was rescued by the eighteen-year-old King Ludwig II of Bavaria, who on his accession paid his debts and funded the theatre. He took up with Cosima, wife of the conductor Bülow — Liszt’s daughter, married to one of Wagner’s fiercest champions, who went on conducting his operas while knowing. Cosima married Wagner and ran Bayreuth for forty-seven years after his death.
In their words — and in plain words
Judaism in Music (1850) — the claim that Jews lack the capacity for genuine artistic creation
He published it first under a pseudonym and again, greatly expanded and signed, in 1869. No name was given and everyone knew the target was Meyerbeer.
Meyerbeer had helped him — supported him in Paris and wrote the recommendation that got Rienzi staged in Dresden. Wagner’s first success came of it.
He cannot be introduced without this. His music was later claimed by the Nazis, and performing it publicly in Israel was taboo for decades. When Barenboim discussed it with a Tel Aviv audience for forty minutes in 2001 and then played the Tristan prelude as an encore, he invited objectors to leave and the rest applauded warmly. The storm broke the next day, driven by politicians who had not been there.
A philosophy made by a life
He refused the word opera and called his works music dramas — a total work of art in which music, drama, poetry and staging fuse. So he abolished the structure of an aria ending and applause following, and made the music run unbroken.
His most widely inherited device is the leitmotif: a short melodic fragment assigned to a character, object or emotion, pointing at that thing whenever it sounds. The ring, the sword, the curse and love each have their own.
Its power is that it can say what is not on stage. If a character lies while the orchestra plays the motif of the truth, only the audience knows. Film music took the technique outright.
The theatre he built was an argument too: the orchestra hidden in a pit, a fan-shaped hall with no aristocratic boxes, the house darkened during the performance. Much of what a theatre now takes for granted began there. The first festival lost heavily and there was not another for six years.
