The age they lived in

Called the Red Priest for his hair, he was ordained but, citing asthma, almost never said mass. At twenty-five he became music teacher at the Ospedale della Pietà in Venice and stayed some thirty years. It was a home for abandoned girls, and the standard of their playing became famous across Europe; audiences heard them from behind a grille. Most of his five hundred concertos were written to fit their abilities. Fashion turned, Venice let him go, and he went to Vienna for patronage — where the emperor died days after he arrived. He was buried in a pauper’s grave the following year.

In their words — and in plain words

Spring has come, and the birds greet it with glad song." — from the sonnet printed with The Four Seasons
The sonnets are printed with the score, and the music imitates each line. The margins carry directions like the sleeping goatherd and the barking dog. It is painting done in sound. This is a very early instance of what would be called programme music. May music depict something, or is it deepest when it depicts nothing? That question became a head-on quarrel between the Berlioz and Brahms camps in the nineteenth century. Vivaldi had built one side of it, in the flesh, a hundred years before the argument began.

A philosophy made by a life

His real achievement is formal. He fixed the concerto as three movements — fast, slow, fast — and standardised the alternation between the band’s recurring ritornello and the soloist stepping out. Bach learned the method by transcribing several of his concertos for keyboard. And then he was forgotten for nearly two centuries. A large cache of autograph scores surfaced in Italy in the 1920s and brought him back; he is now probably the most-heard composer in the repertory. With Bach beside him, he shows that being forgotten and being revived have little to do with the worth of the work.

The questions they asked

May music depict something?
Do we need something that returns before we can hear the rest?
How much does being forgotten have to do with being good?
If a returning refrain is what makes the rest audible — what is the ritornello in your day?
