Milan — city of La Scala and the unification movement
His name was the code for shouting a king’s name past the censors

The age they lived in

An innkeeper’s son from the country. He applied to the Milan Conservatory and was rejected for being too old and holding his hands badly — the school now bears his name. Around twenty-six he lost two children and his wife to illness within two years while under contract to deliver a comic opera, which failed disastrously. He said he would never compose again. The libretto a theatre manager pressed on him was Nabucco. In old age he grew rich, bought a farm in his home district and built a rest home for retired musicians; he said he was prouder of that house than of anything he had composed, and he is buried there.

In their words — and in plain words

Viva VERDI" — graffiti on the walls during the Italian unification
In a city under Austrian rule, shouting the king’s name would get you arrested. But the initials of Vittorio Emanuele Re D’Italia spell VERDI, and shouting a composer’s name is no crime. Why his name? Because of the Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves in Nabucco — exiles in Babylon longing for home, which Italians under Austrian rule took as their own song. There is a musical reason it could become that. A stretch of it has the whole chorus singing one line together, undivided, so anyone can join in. Tens of thousands sang it at his funeral.

A philosophy made by a life

His creed is simple: opera is the voice. The orchestra supports; what drives the drama comes out of a throat on stage. Wagner, born the same year, was doing exactly the opposite and making the orchestra the protagonist. They never met and did not much care for each other. When Wagner died, Verdi left a short note beginning sad, sad, sad — meaning a name had gone from the history of art. So his operas remain hard to sing and wanted by every singer; most of the roles that singers stake a career on are his. La traviata, which tried to put contemporary people in contemporary dress on stage, ran into the censors and was performed in costume of a century earlier; the premiere failed and a revival a year later succeeded. Aida was commissioned for a Cairo theatre built to mark the opening of the Suez Canal. And at seventy-four and eighty he produced Otello and Falstaff — his last work a comedy, the genre that had broken him as a young man.
