A count who, having understood death, asked again how to live
The age they lived in
The same era and country as Dostoevsky, from the opposite position: born into high nobility, heir to an estate with hundreds of serfs. He served as an officer in the Crimean War and lived through the siege of Sevastopol, which shaped how he wrote war. Around emancipation he founded a school for peasant children on his own land and taught in it.
In their words — and in plain words
The life of Ivan Ilyich had been most simple and most ordinary and therefore most terrible." — The Death of Ivan Ilyich
Judge Ivan Ilyich lived as everyone agreed one should — the right post, a suitable marriage, correct furniture. Then a bruise will not heal, and over months of dying one doubt takes him: what if the whole way I lived was wrong?
That is why "therefore most terrible" is frightening. Nothing in his life was a fault and no one blames him. It was simply all measured by other people's standards. Tolstoy writes not a failed life but how a successful one can be empty.
A philosophy made by a life
War and Peace argues against the idea that great men make history: Napoleon believes he directs the battle, and the novel shows that nothing on the field follows anyone's plan. History is the sum of millions of small acts.
In his fifties he lost the ability to say why he should live, and found his answer among peasants rather than his own class. He renounced property, church and state, ploughed and made shoes himself, and was excommunicated. His non-violence reached Gandhi directly — they corresponded, and Gandhi named his South African settlement Tolstoy Farm.
The first Nobel Prize in Literature, in 1901, went to Sully Prudhomme while Tolstoy was alive; some forty Swedish writers sent a letter of protest. He never received it. At eighty-two he walked out of his house to give up property and rank, and died of pneumonia days later at a country railway station.
The questions they asked
A life lived as everyone agreed one should — whose life is it?
Does history move by great men, or by millions of small acts?
Can only someone who has faced death ask the question of life again?
In your life right now, what are you measuring by someone else's standard?
