Western Philosophy
BC 624년경 ~ BC 546년경c. 624 – c. 546 BC · 밀레토스Miletus
All is water" — the first to explain the world without gods
The age they lived in
Miletus was a cosmopolitan port where Egyptian geometry and Babylonian astronomy landed with the cargo. In a merchants' city where no myth held a monopoly, people watching myths collide finally asked: "So what is actually going on?" Philosophy was born not in a capital, but in a harbor.
In their words — and in plain words
The first principle (archē) of all things is water." — Thales, as reported by Aristotle
The answer is wrong — but the question's form is the revolution. Not "which god made the world" but "what is the world made of," answered with something anyone can observe and refute. The moment a claim became refutable, science and philosophy began together.
A philosophy made by a life
Two tales show the philosopher's two faces: he fell into a well while watching stars — mocked by a servant girl — and, as if in reply, used astronomy to predict a bumper olive harvest, rented every press in advance, and made a fortune. He is said to have predicted the eclipse of May 28, 585 BC — the first scientific prediction with a date. Calculation began doing the work of gods.
The questions they asked
What is the world made of?
What is an explanation — and how does it differ from a story?
Is "useless" knowledge really useless?
Among the explanations you accept — how many are actually just stories?
