The age they lived in

He trained in law and worked as a ministry clerk until, at twenty-three, he left for the newly opened conservatory — a late start. He was homosexual, which in Russia then could not be shown. He married a former student at twenty-seven; it collapsed within weeks and he waded into a river attempting suicide. He died at fifty-three. Cholera was announced, but it has long been suggested that he drank unboiled water deliberately, or was pressed into suicide by a court of honour. Neither has been established.

In their words — and in plain words

Over twelve hundred letters exchanged with Nadezhda von Meck across thirteen years — they never met
A wealthy widow paid him an annuity that supported his life, on one condition: that they never meet. For thirteen years they exchanged only letters, writing about music, life and God. They crossed paths by accident a few times and did not speak. She ended it one day without real explanation, citing finances that were not in fact the reason, as later came out. He was deeply wounded and never learned why. That a relationship premised on not meeting lasted thirteen years is itself a question. Is there an intimacy possible only without a face? Set beside the relationships we now conduct through screens, it is not so strange a story.

A philosophy made by a life

What he changed was the standing of ballet music. It had been accompaniment arranged for the convenience of dancers; the composer’s name did not matter, and numbers were swapped in from elsewhere as needed. He wrote ballet like a symphony: themes develop, the orchestration thickens, and the music carries the story. So his ballets stand without the dancing — which is why we listen to Swan Lake and The Nutcracker on record. The first attempt failed. The 1877 premiere of Swan Lake was poorly received, partly because the music was judged too complex to dance to. Its present standing dates from a revival with new choreography two years after his death. He dismissed his own widely loved 1812 Overture as loud and crude. His last work, the Pathétique, ends not fast but fading very slowly away — an ending with few precedents at the time. He died nine days after its premiere.
