He spoke of an invisible hand — but of sympathy first: a moral philosopher

The age they lived in

The height of the Scottish Enlightenment: Hume’s closest friend (he was at his deathbed) and professor of moral philosophy at Glasgow. As the Industrial Revolution began, he toured pin factories and talked with merchants, observing where wealth comes from. The reigning doctrine was mercantilism — that gold and silver are national wealth and trade a game where one side’s gain is another’s loss. Smith set out to overturn the premise entire.

In their words — and in plain words

It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest." — The Wealth of Nations
다만 스미스 본인은 이 메커니즘이 무조건 작동한다고 믿지 않았다 — 그가 가장 경계한 것은 오히려 상인들의 담합이었다("같은 업종 사람들은 모이기만 하면 대중에 대한 음모로 끝난다").Not a hymn to selfishness but the discovery of a social mechanism: the miracle by which tens of thousands of strangers feed and clothe me daily results not from their goodwill but from each pursuing their own interest, coordinated by markets. He used the phrase “invisible hand” only three times in his life, but the insight is this: order arises though no one designed the whole. Smith himself, however, never believed the mechanism worked unconditionally — what he most feared was collusion among merchants: “people of the same trade seldom meet but the conversation ends in a conspiracy against the public.”

A philosophy made by a life

To know only The Wealth of Nations is to know half of Smith. His first masterwork — the one he preferred — was The Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759), which opens: however selfish man may be supposed, there are evidently principles in his nature which interest him in the fortune of others. That principle is sympathy, and his moral theory holds that we judge our own conduct by borrowing the eyes of an “impartial spectator” within. Market man and moral man were never separate for him: markets work only inside a vessel of moral sentiment, law, and institutions. He was revising the Moral Sentiments until just before his death. In fact he argued much that those who invoke his name today would find uncomfortable: he defended high wages for workers (no society can be flourishing and happy, he wrote, of which the far greater part are poor and miserable), diagnosed how the division of labor stupefies the laborer and proposed public education as remedy, and supported taxation of a progressive character. A lifelong bachelor living with his mother, so absent-minded he once reportedly walked fifteen miles in his dressing gown. Before dying he had most of his unpublished manuscripts burned. On this map he is Marx’s interlocutor: both located value in labor, both looked at the same industrial civilization — and reached opposite conclusions. That argument is not over.
