Art & Aesthetics
Once a thing is familiar we stop seeing it and merely recognise it — art’s work is to make it hard again

The age they lived in

Petrograd, 1917. In the year of the revolution the twenty-four-year-old Shklovsky founded OPOYAZ with other young linguists and literary scholars. Until then studying literature meant studying an author’s life, era and ideas; they proposed stripping all that away and asking only how the text itself was built — hence Formalism. He was not a desk-bound figure: he served with an armoured-car unit in the First World War and was tangled enough in revolutionary politics to cross a border with his life at stake.

In their words — and in plain words

(1917)"Art exists so that one may recover the sensation of life — to make the stone stony." — Art as Device (1917)
We do not see what we are used to. Asked to draw the alley you walk down daily, you cannot — you have passed through it without looking. He called this the automatisation of perception and cited Tolstoy’s diary: cleaning a room, unable to recall whether he had dusted the sofa; and if the act left no trace, that stretch of life was as good as unlived. Defamiliarisation is the technique that breaks the automatism. Tolstoy described an opera through the eyes of someone who does not know what an opera is, and treated private property from the viewpoint of a horse — only then do phrases like my land, my horse start to sound strange.
The device of art is to make objects unfamiliar, to make form difficult, to increase the difficulty and length of perception." — Art as Device
It follows that easy prose is not always good prose: in art, friction can be the point. Poems break lines at awkward places, films refuse the comfortable angle, novels shuffle the order of time. The misreading is easy, though. Difficulty is not the goal; what becomes visible only by passing through difficulty is the goal. Difficulty with nothing on the other side is just unkind writing.

A philosophy made by a life

The fate of Formalism split his life. From the late 1920s Soviet demands that art serve the class struggle hardened, and a school that looked only at form became politically dangerous. In 1930 Shklovsky published a piece titled a monument to a scientific error, disowning his own theory; the settled view today is that the self-criticism was coerced. He lived another fifty-four years and wrote screenplays, biographies and memoirs steadily — but what preserved him is a short paper written at twenty-four. The concept survived. Through the Prague Circle it fed structuralism and narratology, and Brecht’s alienation effect — deliberately breaking the audience’s absorption — is a cousin, though whether there was direct influence is still argued. Advertising, design and film still plant deliberate awkwardness in the same lineage. The idea is useful because it does not stay inside art. The face of someone you have lived with for years, the work you do daily, the institutions you take for granted — everything familiar is subject to automatism, and defamiliarisation is training in seeing them as if for the first time. It is roughly what the philosophers in this atlas spend their lives doing.
