He invented the scene in which a person talks to themselves
The age they lived in
Elizabethan London held some 200,000 people, and the playhouses stood south of the Thames beside the brothels and bear-pits, nobles and penny groundlings in one room. The Reformation had reversed itself often enough that people had watched yesterday's truth become today's heresy. Word was spreading that the earth might not be the centre. The question of what is certain was not confined to scholars.
In their words — and in plain words
To be, or not to be, that is the question." — Hamlet, III.i
Worn smooth by fame. What Hamlet is actually doing is arithmetic, not contemplating suicide as such: if living hurts this much, why does everyone continue? His answer is cold — because no one knows what follows death, and a known pain beats an unknown one.
The form matters more. This is a soliloquy: a man alone on stage following his own thought aloud. Before Shakespeare there is almost nothing like it. The moment a character speaks to himself rather than to another, interiority exists on stage for the first time.
A philosophy made by a life
His characters do not reduce to a trait. Hamlet is an irresolute intellectual and a cruel joker; Macbeth is a murderer who knows exactly what he is doing; Lear is a foolish father who learns humanity too late. The invention is that characters change inside the play, and change through self-knowledge rather than event.
He also refuses to resolve. King Lear ends with no one redeemed — the good daughter dies, the repentant father dies. Audiences could not bear it: a happy-ending version held the stage for 150 years, and the original returned only in the nineteenth century.
The questions they asked
When a person speaks to themselves, what comes into being?
Known pain or unknown fear — which keeps us here?
Why do we need a story in which no one is redeemed?
What you say to yourself when alone — how far is it from what you say to others?
The questions this person stands under같은 물음 아래 다른 시대의 사상가들이 함께 서 있습니다 — 3개의 질문에서 이어집니다.Thinkers from other ages stand under the same question — this leads on through 3 questions.
