The age they lived in
A schoolmaster’s son from the edge of Vienna. He trained as a teacher at his father’s wish, taught small children for a few years, and gave it up. After that he had no job — no court or church post came, and he did not own a piano, living between friends’ rooms. What he had instead were friends: poets, painters and a lawyer or two who gathered to hear his new pieces at evenings called Schubertiads. That is why his music is on a salon scale. He gave exactly one public concert of his own music. He died at thirty-one, having written Winterreise and his last three piano sonatas in his final year.
In their words — and in plain words
I like these songs more than all the rest." — to his friends after first playing them Winterreise, 1827
His friends, it is reported, were dismayed by how dark it was. The cycle of twenty-four poems follows a rejected man leaving a village in winter, and there is scarcely a plot. He keeps walking.
He said this a year before his death, already ill. To call what others find dark the thing you like best, the darkness has to be yours.
Musically what he changed was the standing of the accompaniment. Before him the piano supported the voice; in the first song of Winterreise it walks in the same rhythm from beginning to end. The accompaniment says what the words do not.
A philosophy made by a life
The title king of the art song is explained by the numbers alone: over six hundred songs by his death at thirty-one. He wrote Gretchen at the Spinning Wheel at seventeen, and on one day at eighteen he is recorded writing eight songs.
More important than quantity is that he made poem, piano and voice into three equals. In Erlkönig the piano is a galloping horse; in Gretchen it is the turning wheel — which stops dead at the moment she remembers his kiss.
His greatest gift was for changing key. The same melody shifts from major to minor and the colour changes, as in Der Lindenbaum where a memory of sweet dreams under a tree suddenly darkens. Memory and present, hope and resignation, distinguished by a single note.
He carried a torch at Beethoven’s funeral and a year later was buried beside him, as he had asked.
