The other arts depict the world; music says what the world is saying
The age they lived in
Born to a wealthy merchant family in Danzig (now Gdańsk); his father wanted a merchant, and his mother Johanna was a far more famous novelist than he was. He wrote his major work between twenty-six and thirty and published it in late 1818 (dated 1819). It barely sold. He scheduled his Berlin lectures against Hegel’s and gave up for want of students. Only in the 1850s, after Hegel was dead and Europe’s revolutionary heat had cooled, did his pessimism find readers — and he spent his last years in Frankfurt enjoying a fame that had taken forty years to arrive.
In their words — and in plain words
Music is not, like the other arts, a copy of the Ideas, but a copy of the will itself." — The World as Will and Representation I, §52
In his system the world has layers: at the bottom the Will — blind, aimless, endless striving; above it the fixed forms that striving takes; at the top the individual things we see. Painting shows things; poetry shows human action. Every other art goes through the middle layer.
Music skips it. There is no object depicted. A sad melody is not a picture of someone’s particular sorrow but of sorrow itself — which is why wordless instrumental music moves us, and why putting the feeling into words always falls short. It is Western philosophy’s most famous answer to the question of why music works without explaining anything.
A philosophy made by a life
Before this, instrumental music ranked below vocal music in the West: without words, no one could say what it meant, so it was taken less seriously. Since Boethius music had been a science of ratio; the Enlightenment treated it as imitation of feeling. Either way, music stood in for something else.
Schopenhauer reversed the order: that music depicts nothing is not a defect but a privilege. That single inversion lifted instrumental music to the summit of the arts for the rest of the century. Wagner read the book in 1854, kept it beside him for life, and bought copies for friends. The young Nietzsche was gripped enough to write The Birth of Tragedy — before turning against him.
One correction, though. Schopenhauer did not care for Wagner’s music. He loved Rossini and Mozart, and played the flute every evening after dinner. The man who wrote that the world is suffering and the will to live must be denied played the flute every evening.
The questions they asked
Why does music work without explanation?
Can the art that depicts nothing be the deepest?
If it cannot be put into words, is it less true?
