그가 살았던 시대The age they lived in
Nineteenth-century linguistics was effectively history. The discovery that Sanskrit, Greek and Latin branched from one root drove the whole field, and to study language was to trace how words had shifted over centuries. Saussure was the prodigy of that field: at twenty-one he published a reconstruction of the Indo-European vowel system in which he argued that a sound nobody had ever attested must once have existed. Half a century later Hittite tablets were excavated and the sound was there. Yet what carries his name is a book he did not write.
그의 말, 그리고 쉬운 해설In their words — and in plain words
"언어에는 차이만 있을 뿐, 적극적인 항은 없다." — 『일반언어학 강의』(1916)"In language there are only differences, without positive terms." — Course in General Linguistics (1916)
The meaning is not in the word. What blue is depends on where green stops and violet begins, which is why languages cut the spectrum at different places — Korean’s pureuda covers both sky and grass.
Saussure’s own comparison was chess. A piece’s value comes not from its wood or its carving but from its relations to the other pieces on the board — which is why losing a knight and replacing it with a bottle cap leaves the game intact.
"기호는 자의적이다." — 『일반언어학 강의』"The sign is arbitrary." — Course in General Linguistics
There is no necessary link between sound and sense: nothing about a dog requires the syllable dog, and chien does the job equally well.
An odd consequence follows. Though arbitrary, it cannot be changed by an individual — you cannot decide alone that from tomorrow a dog is a desk. A rule groundless and binding at once: Saussure took that doubleness to be the heart of language, and later readers noticed that law, manners, money and fashion work the same way. Structuralism starts here.
삶이 만든 철학A philosophy made by a life
One thing must be said plainly: Saussure did not write the Course in General Linguistics. After his death in 1913 two students compiled it from other students’ lecture notes — and neither of the two had actually attended the course. What we call his thought is a reconstruction passed through several hands, and when his own manuscripts surfaced late in the twentieth century they diverged from the published lectures at points. It is also a case study in how a person’s thinking survives.
The book changed the century anyway. He drew two distinctions: langue and parole — the rule system a community shares versus what an individual actually utters — and synchrony versus diachrony, the structure at one moment versus its change over time. Linguistics, he insisted, should study the first: the system as it stands now. In a field that had studied only history for a century, this was a reversal.
The method spread beyond language. Lévi-Strauss read kinship, Barthes read advertising, fashion and food, Lacan read the unconscious — all as systems made of differences between elements. The reaction came too: Derrida attacked Saussure for privileging speech over writing, and Chomsky went the opposite way entirely, treating language not as a shared social system but as a capacity built into the individual mind.
그가 던진 질문들The questions they asked
- 낱말의 뜻은 그 낱말 안에 있는가, 다른 낱말과의 관계에 있는가?Is a word’s meaning inside the word, or in its relations to other words?
- 아무 근거 없는 규칙을 개인이 바꿀 수 없는 일은 어떻게 가능한가?How can a rule be groundless and still impossible for an individual to change?
- 언어가 다르면 세계를 자르는 자리도 달라지는가?If the language differs, does the world get cut at different joints?
당신이 쓰는 말에 이름이 없는 감정이 있다면, 그것은 당신에게 없는 감정입니까?If a feeling has no name in your language — is it a feeling you do not have?
