A logician and a jailed earl — he thought clearly, and acted on it
The age they lived in
He lived nearly the whole century (98 years) in which Victorian certainty collapsed through two world wars. Grandson of a twice prime-ministerial earl, orphaned young and raised by a severe grandmother, he recalled surviving suicidal boyhood on the wish “to know more mathematics” — a craving for certainty that became his lifelong engine. At Cambridge he undertook the project of founding all mathematics on logic.
In their words — and in plain words
— 러셀의 유명한 경구 (요지)"The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, and wiser people so full of doubts." — Russell’s famous remark
Not cynicism but a summary of his epistemology: the strength of a conviction and the strength of its grounds are separate things, and intellectual honesty means believing only as far as the evidence warrants. His teapot made the point vivid — if I claim a teapot orbits between Earth and Mars, must you believe it because you cannot disprove it? The burden of proof lies with the claimant. Socratic knowing-that-you-don’t-know, updated for the century of science.
A philosophy made by a life
His logical project is a heroic failure. It was Russell himself who found the fatal contradiction in Frege’s system — the set of all sets that are not members of themselves: if a barber shaves exactly those who do not shave themselves, who shaves the barber? The foundations of mathematics shook. With Whitehead he spent a decade on the three volumes of Principia Mathematica (the proof that 1+1=2 arrives hundreds of pages in), and Gödel later proved the completion impossible — but the byproducts of that failure were modern logic and analytic philosophy, and that logic became the theoretical basis of the computer: he is in the pedigree of the machine on which you are viewing this map. The master of technical logic was also his age’s finest popular stylist — A History of Western Philosophy and The Conquest of Happiness were world bestsellers, and he took the 1950 Nobel in Literature. And he acted: expelled from Cambridge and imprisoned for opposing WWI (he wrote a book in his cell), co-author with Einstein of the 1955 manifesto against nuclear weapons, jailed again at 89 after an anti-nuclear sit-in — when the judge offered release for a pledge of good behavior, the old man declined. No gap between clear thinking and living accordingly: Wang Yangming’s unity of knowing and acting, lived a logician’s way. Record, too, that his student Wittgenstein inherited and then surpassed his logic — and that Russell was the first to recognize and champion that genius: the two dots at Cambridge are teacher and rival at once.
