A creation hymn that ends in "perhaps not even he knows"
The age they lived in
Punjab after the Indus cities faded. Over a thousand hymns, transmitted purely by memory for three millennia. Among them, one strange hymn about the beginning of the world — that suddenly turns on itself.
In their words — and in plain words
Then there was neither non-existence nor existence... Whence this creation arose — the gods came after — who then knows? He who surveys it from the highest heaven, he surely knows. Or perhaps even he does not." — Rigveda 10.129
A scripture sings of creation — and ends with "no one knows; perhaps not even god." The courage to leave the question open, inside a sacred text, three thousand years ago. Philosophy begins exactly there: in bearing the not-knowing.
A philosophy made by a life
No death, no immortality, no sign of night or day — only "That One" breathing by its own heat, and desire as the first seed. Then, in its final verses, the hymn doubts itself. The Upanishads, the Buddha's unanswered questions, and modern cosmology's "we do not yet know" all walked in through the door this hymn left open.
The questions they asked
What was there in the beginning?
Are there limits to knowing?
Why is there something rather than nothing?
When the honest answer is "I don't know" — can you actually say it?
