Why should what sounds good be a simple ratio? — the question the West has held for 2,500 years
The age they lived in
Born on Samos, he left around forty for Croton, a Greek colony in southern Italy, and founded a community bound by secrecy, dietary rules, and shared property. The difficulty is that he wrote nothing. Everything comes from later report, much of it shaped by the ancient habit of crediting a school’s findings to its founder. The right-triangle theorem was known in Babylon and India before him. The monochord experiment and the story of the blacksmith’s hammers are later legends.
In their words — and in plain words
— 아리스토텔레스, 『형이상학』 1권 (본인 저작이 아니라 후대의 증언이다)"The so-called Pythagoreans held the principles of number to be the principles of all things." — Aristotle, Metaphysics I (a later report, not his own writing)
Why number? Because of sound. Halve a string and it sounds an octave higher (2:1); take two thirds and you get a fifth (3:2); three quarters, a fourth (4:3). Cut anywhere else and the sound turns sour. What pleases the ear coincides exactly with simple whole-number ratios. From there came the leap: if sound is made of number, so is the world — hence the music of the spheres, which still had Kepler looking for chords in planetary orbits two thousand years later.
A philosophy made by a life
His marker sits at Croton, not Samos, because that is where the thought was made — and what he made was closer to a religious order than a school: an oath of silence, dietary rules, and belief in the soul’s transmigration. Mathematics and music were practice, not scholarship; knowing the ratios was a way of purifying the soul.
Then the harmonious system broke in its makers’ hands. The diagonal of a unit square cannot be written as any ratio of whole numbers. If all things are number, this was a number that should not exist. A story says the school drowned the man who let it out; whether that happened cannot be checked. What is certain is that the belief in a world of beautiful proportion was undone by the very tool that built it.
His practical legacy is real. Stacking 3:2 to build a scale is called Pythagorean tuning, and twelve stacks do not land back where you started. That small gap is the Pythagorean comma, and Western music spent two thousand years arguing about where to hide it — the tuning debates of Bach’s century are its descendants.
The questions they asked
Can beauty be written as number?
Is the world made of number, or do we read it as number?
When you find the fact that breaks the system, must you say it?
Something you simply find pleasing — have you ever considered that a rule might be hiding inside it?
