Perhaps the oldest surviving book of wisdom

The age they lived in

Old Kingdom Egypt, the age of the pyramids. An aging vizier writes advice for his son — the first known manual on how to live and serve within an ordered world.

In their words — and in plain words

Good speech is more hidden than greenstone, yet it may be found among maids at the grindstones." — Maxims of Ptahhotep
The top official of a god-king says: wisdom does not follow rank. If a servant girl speaks truth, learn from her — not as etiquette, but as strategy.

A philosophy made by a life

A retiring vizier leaves 37 maxims to his son — do not argue with the hot-tempered, listen above all. The text survived as a school copybook for over a millennium. Two thousand years before philosophy, humans were already writing books on how to live.

The questions they asked

What is it to live well?
Who owns wisdom?
Why is listening harder than speaking?
The wisest thing you heard recently — whose mouth did it come from?
The questions this person stands under

Thinkers from other ages stand under the same question — this leads on through 3 questions.
