Western Philosophy
BC 428년경 ~ BC 348년경c. 428 – c. 348 BC · 아테네(아카데메이아)Athens, the Academy
He spent a lifetime writing his teacher's death — and invented the university
The age they lived in
Born to Athens' highest aristocracy, Plato was headed for politics — until his twenties delivered two disillusionments: the terror of an oligarchy his own relatives joined, and then the restored democracy executing the most just man he knew. If neither tyranny nor democracy could protect Socrates, the design of politics itself had to be rethought. That conclusion, at 28, became the starting point of Western political philosophy.
In their words — and in plain words
— 『국가』 7권, 동굴의 비유 (요지)"Prisoners chained in a cave take shadows on the wall for reality. If one were freed and returned to tell of the light, they would mock him — perhaps kill him." — Republic VII, the Allegory of the Cave
Beyond "the world you see may not be all there is" — the last line is the point: the one who returns from the light is not welcomed but killed. This is not theory; it is testimony. Plato watched a man die for doubting the shadows. The Cave is philosophy — and a eulogy.
A philosophy made by a life
After the execution he wandered a decade — Megara, Egypt, the Pythagoreans of southern Italy; in Syracuse his experiment in philosopher-kingship nearly got him sold into slavery. Around 40 he returned and chose another path: a school in the grove of Academus. The Academy lasted nine centuries and named every academy since; the legendary sign at its gate — "let no one ignorant of geometry enter" — declared it a training ground for argument over opinion. Unlike his teacher, he wrote — but only dialogues, with Socrates forever the protagonist: not textbooks of answers but scripts that pull the reader into the questioning, preserving the dead man's method inside text. Whitehead's verdict: Western philosophy is "a series of footnotes to Plato."

Who should rule?
Why be just in a world where the just lose?
Of the things you now take for real — which might be shadows on your cave wall?
