He turned the television into an instrument of thought — the father of video art
The age they lived in
The age of television: in the late twentieth century, history's most powerful image machine occupied every living room — a one-way medium, broadcasters transmitting, the masses receiving. Born to a wealthy Seoul family that fled to Japan during the Korean War, Paik studied aesthetics and music at Tokyo University, then plunged into avant-garde music in Germany, where meeting John Cage in 1958 bent his orbit — Cage had made even chance and silence into music, and Paik pushed that spirit beyond sound. Through the piano-smashing, necktie-cutting vanguard of Fluxus, he arrived at his first solo show in Wuppertal, 1963, and did what no one had done: thirteen televisions laid, stood, and signal-distorted — turning the viewer into a manipulator.
In their words — and in plain words
Art is a hoax." — Paik, in a 1984 homecoming interview
Not anti-art but a theory of art. His gloss: art has no correct answers, and the real hoax is solemnly pretending it does. The artist's job is to smash fixed ideas, mix old and new, and astonish. As a shaman charms gods and humans into connection (his own analogy for himself), the artist charms technology and humanity into connection — a cheerful demolition notice served on the temple of self-serious art.
A philosophy made by a life
Moving to New York in 1964, he won fame and notoriety with radical performances alongside cellist Charlotte Moorman, and when Sony's first portable video camera hit the market in 1965 he bought one and screened that day's footage in a café that night — the moment moving images left the broadcasters' monopoly for individual hands, he made year one of a new art. His prophecy that everyone would have their own channel came true as YouTube; the phrase he coined in a 1974 Rockefeller report — "electronic superhighway" — became the name of the internet age. His work was not techno-worship but the humanization of technology: "to hate technology, one must first know how to use it." He seated a meditating Buddha before its own closed-circuit image (TV Buddha), and called the moon "the oldest TV." On New Year's Day 1984 he answered Orwell head-on with the satellite broadcast Good Morning, Mr. Orwell — using the very airwaves predicted to serve Big Brother to link artists in New York and Paris live before tens of millions: "Mr. Orwell, you were only half right." Technology can surveil or connect; humans decide which. Paralyzed on one side by a stroke in 1996, he worked on from a wheelchair until his death in Miami in 2006. A Seoul child turned war refugee who, via Tokyo, Düsseldorf, and New York, rewired humanity's media senses — his ashes were divided among Seoul, New York, and Germany: a fitting end for a man who lived without borders.
The questions they asked
Does technology surveil us or connect us — and who decides?
What changes when a one-way medium falls into everyone's hands?
Why must art be serious — must it?
The screen in your hand — are you connecting through it, or captured by it?
