Eastern Philosophy
Questions asked of heaven — the first written questions in Chinese

The age they lived in

The Shang state ran on divination. Kings cracked turtle shells and ox bones with fire, read the fissures as heaven's answers, and carved the questions into the bone. These carvings are the oldest Chinese writing — a script born to record questions.

In their words — and in plain words

Divined: Will Shang receive a good harvest this year?" — inscribed oracle bone from Yinxu
Three thousand years ago, the highest form of state decision-making was a question. The king asked before he acted. Ask, record, compare with outcomes — the habit that would one day become the skeleton of scholarship.

A philosophy made by a life

Rediscovered in 1899 — in bones being sold and ground up as "dragon bone" medicine. The inscriptions preserve the anxieties of kings: wars, weather, even toothaches blamed on ancestral anger. The form survived Shang's fall, flowed into the Zhou Yi (I Ching), which was reborn from divination manual into philosophy. The river of East Asian thought springs from these bones.

The questions they asked

Does heaven intervene in human affairs?
Can the future be known?
Why do humans ask something greater than themselves?
Before a great decision — what, or whom, do you ask?
The questions this person stands under

Thinkers from other ages stand under the same question — this leads on through 2 questions.
