Western Philosophy
The first to live after the death of God — philosophy with a hammer
The age they lived in
Late nineteenth-century Europe — after Darwin, the century of science. Churches still stood, but within the educated mind God had already retired as an explanatory principle. Nietzsche's diagnosis cut a layer deeper than others': the death of God is not a religious event but the collapse of the ground under everything built upon him — morality, truth, meaning. A pastor's son, professor at 24, he resigned at 34 in ruined health and wandered stateless for a decade between Alps and Mediterranean — summers always at Sils Maria, "six thousand feet beyond man and time."
In their words — and in plain words
God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him... How shall we comfort ourselves, the murderers of all murderers?" — The Gay Science §125, the madman
Commonly misread as atheism's victory speech; the scene is its opposite — horror. A madman with a lantern at noon cries that we are the murderers, and the atheists laugh at him. They are Nietzsche's target: those who erased God yet expect to keep, free of charge, the morality and meaning he underwrote — believing the building stands after the ground has gone. The bill, he warns, is coming; he tried to pay it alone, in advance.
A philosophy made by a life
In August 1881, by a rock on the lake at Sils Maria, the thought of eternal recurrence seized him: if your life, exactly as it is — every pain, every boredom — repeated infinitely? A curse — unless you could cry "Good: once more!" That cry was his touchstone of affirmation: in a godless world the answer must be not a beyond but the infinite yes to this life. From it came Thus Spoke Zarathustra. His genealogy is archaeology with a hammer: On the Genealogy of Morality digs up the origin of good and evil, showing "evil" may be a weapon invented by the resentment (ressentiment) of the weak against the strong — and if morality was manufactured in historical power relations rather than handed down from heaven, it can be appraised and remade: the revaluation of all values. Through migraines, vomiting, and near-blindness he wrote ten books that barely sold. In January 1889 he collapsed in a Turin square (tradition says embracing a flogged horse), lived eleven years in darkness, and died in 1900 — the year his century began. One posthumous tragedy more: his sister edited his papers into anti-Semitic shape, enabling the Nazi appropriation of a man who despised anti-Semitism and had broken with her over it. His question still stands: in an age when neither God nor tradition answers, can you author the value of your own life?
The questions they asked
Is morality possible without God — and on what ground?
If this life recurred eternally — could you say yes to it?
Was our morality discovered — or invented?
Your life so far, repeated infinitely without the slightest change — could you say "Good: once more"? If not, what would you change first?
