Religious Thought
The logician of emptiness — nothing exists except in relation

The age they lived in

Six centuries after the Buddha: Buddhism had split into schools building elaborate scholastic systems, while a new wave — the Mahāyāna — was rising. Nāgārjuna, said to be a South Indian brahmin, laid its philosophical foundation; nearly every later Mahāyāna school, from Zen to Tibetan Buddhism, honors him as a common patriarch — the headwaters of the river Wonhyo would annotate and Huineng would channel.

In their words — and in plain words

Whatever is dependently arisen, that we call emptiness. It is a dependent designation — and precisely that is the middle way." — Mūlamadhyamakakārikā 24
Emptiness is not nihilism — demolishing that misreading is half the book. It means nothing exists alone, by its own power: no fire without fuel, no left without right, no “I” without relations. To say all things are empty is to say all things lean on each other — not a declaration of nothingness but an ontology of relation.

A philosophy made by a life

His method is the tetralemma: test any claim through all four corners — it is, it is not, it both is and is not, it neither is nor is not — until the opponent’s premise collapses of itself. Building no doctrine of his own, he is often compared to Socrates — except that Socrates climbed toward definitions, while Nāgārjuna loosened the very grip on definition. The boldest move comes last: emptiness itself is empty — grasp it as one more “truth” and it too becomes a disease. Yet his two-truths doctrine preserves everyday language and logic: a ladder may be a fiction and still be needed to reach the roof. Tradition paints him as philosopher, alchemist, physician, and friend of kings — his verse letter to a Sātavāhana ruler survives as a Buddhist ethics for statesmen. His relational ontology finds unexpected interlocutors today: physicists who compare it to a quantum world described in relations and probabilities rather than substances, and cognitive science’s view of the self as process — a junction where this map will meet the Science Atlas again.

The questions they asked

Can anything exist “in itself”?
Is the self a substance — or a knot of relations?
Can clinging to truth itself become a disease?
Strip the relations from “you” one by one — family, work, name, memory — what, if anything, remains at the end?
