세계 최초의 장편소설을 쓴 궁녀 — 이야기로 마음을 해부하다A lady-in-waiting who wrote the world's first novel — dissecting the heart through story
그가 살았던 시대The age they lived in
The height of Heian court society, where the Fujiwara ruled through imperial marriages. Chinese, the official script, belonged to men; women wrote diaries and letters in kana, the "women's hand" — and from that marginal script came the essence of Japanese literature. A scholar's daughter who learned Chinese by eavesdropping (her father sighed that she was not born a boy), widowed young, she began a tale that won her a post at court.
그의 말, 그리고 쉬운 해설In their words — and in plain words
"이야기는, 좋은 일이든 나쁜 일이든, 이 세상을 살아가는 사람의 모습 가운데 보아 넘길 수 없고 들어 넘길 수 없는 것이 있어 — 후세에 전하고 싶어 가슴에 담아둘 수 없게 될 때, 태어나는 것입니다." — 『겐지모노가타리』 반딧불 첩, 겐지의 모노가타리론 (요지)"Stories are born when there is something in the lives of people — good or ill — that one cannot bear to let pass, cannot keep shut in one's heart, and must hand down." — The Tale of Genji, "Fireflies" chapter
소설 속 인물의 입으로 소설을 변호한 것이다 — 당시 이야기책은 여자들의 심심풀이 거짓말 취급을 받았으니까. 역사서(정사)는 사건의 겉을 기록하지만, 이야기는 차마 담아둘 수 없는 마음의 속을 기록한다는 것. 허구가 사실보다 진실할 수 있다는 이 선언은, 소설이라는 장르가 스스로의 존재 이유를 처음으로 논증한 순간이다.A defense of fiction placed in a fictional character's mouth — at a time when tales were dismissed as women's idle lies. Official histories record the outside of events; stories record what the heart cannot contain. Fiction can be truer than fact: the first moment the novel argued for its own existence.
삶이 만든 철학A philosophy made by a life
The Tale of Genji: 54 chapters, four hundred characters, four generations — called the world's first novel not for its length but its method. What begins as the amours of a shining prince becomes something else: the jealousy and guilt of the loved, hearts that turn into living ghosts, and after Genji's death ten final chapters of darkness without rescue — the invention of the psychological novel, tracking inner lives as they change through time. Its pervading tone is mono no aware, the piercing poignancy of things that pass: cherry blossoms are beautiful because they fall — Buddhist impermanence translated from doctrine into feeling. Her diary, written amid the court's splendor, preserves one line: "this self with nowhere to set its heart." That homeless heart bore a story that has lived a thousand years.
