Impartial care and no more war — the engineer-philosopher who ran to defend city walls
The age they lived in
After Confucius, as the Ru school rose to dominance, the first frontal alternative was Mohism. Mozi is remembered as coming from the artisan class, and a laborer’s gaze runs through all his thought: he attacked lavish funerals and ritual music as “wasting the living’s goods on the dead,” and rejected fatalism. As the Warring States made war routine, his group organized into something unprecedented — a school of argument that was also a corps of military engineers.
In their words — and in plain words
Whence come the harms of the world? From failing to care for one another... Regard another’s state as you regard your own." — Mozi, “Impartial Care”
Impartial care sounds like an impossible demand to love everyone equally, but his argument is severely practical: the sum of partial loves — my family, my state — is precisely war. Hence he never blushed at the word “benefit”: impartial care is right not because it is noble but because it profits everyone. Where Confucian love radiates in circles from the near, Mohist love ignores borders from the start — a declaration of universalism 2,400 years ago.
A philosophy made by a life
One story contains his whole philosophy. Hearing that Chu would attack Song with a new siege ladder built by the master engineer Gongshu Ban, Mozi walked ten days and nights to Chu, tearing his clothes to bind his blistered feet. Before the king he staged a mock siege with Gongshu: his belt for a city wall, wooden slips for weapons — nine assaults, nine repulses. When Gongshu said he knew a way to win but would not say it (kill Mozi), Mozi replied: killing me is useless — three hundred of my disciples already man Song’s walls with my defensive engineering. Chu called off the invasion: a war stopped by argument. The Mohists lived that way — a paramilitary order under a grand master, fighting only defensive campaigns, eating and dressing plainly, risking death. The Mozi contains manuals of siege defense and propositions of optics, mechanics, and geometry (light travels in straight lines; the principle of the lever) — ancient China’s most advanced scientific record, inside a pacifist’s book. Logic was theirs too. Yet when empire came and Confucianism became state doctrine, Mohism vanished as if erased — forgotten for two thousand years, rediscovered only amid the Western shock of the late Qing. On this map he stands beside Mencius and Xunzi asking: must love begin with the near — or aim at everyone from the start?
