The age they lived in

From the age of six he was taken round the courts of Europe by his father. The touring lasted nearly ten years and he never attended school; his sister Nannerl travelled as a prodigy too, until marriageable age ended her performing. At twenty-five he walked out of service to the Archbishop of Salzburg — literally kicked out, he wrote to his father, by the archbishop’s steward. In Vienna he lived from lessons, subscription concerts and publication. He was bad with money, running debts even in good years and writing repeated letters begging loans. He died at thirty-five; the cause remains unsettled.

In their words — and in plain words

I sat above the cook and below the valet." — letter to his father, 1781
The rank of a court musician is entirely in that line. He was an employee and ate at the servants’ table. The word genius is fastened to his name, but while he lived his place was between the cook and the valet. That he kicked the place over is a hinge in the history of music. Instead of suiting one patron’s taste you face the taste of several hundred ticket-buyers: freedom gained, security lost. It did not go well. He earned handsomely for a few years, then irregularly. But the musicians after him followed the road he opened. Beethoven could write that there are thousands of princes and only one Beethoven because Mozart had already pushed the door.

A philosophy made by a life

No one has had the word genius attached as often. Three grounds: he began composing at five, left over six hundred works by his death at thirty-five, and his autographs are unusually clean of corrections. The last is overstated. Sketches survive and revisions are found. The myth of effortlessness was enlarged by posterity, and it erases the labour he actually did. What was erased more thoroughly is Salieri. In 1823 the seventy-three-year-old Salieri, deranged in hospital, said he had killed Mozart; lucid again, he denied the rumour himself. But through Pushkin’s play and Rimsky-Korsakov’s opera to Shaffer’s Amadeus, the reputation of the man who taught Beethoven, Schubert and Liszt was erased by fiction across two centuries. One more correction: the story that he was thrown into a pauper’s pit is false. It was a standard common burial under Joseph II’s austerity rules, as most Viennese received.
