He told kings, to their faces, that the people outrank the king
The age they lived in
The Warring States: seven powers waging wars of annihilation, burying captive populations, hiring theorists of wealth and power. A century after Confucius, his teaching was dismissed as naive idealism. Mencius met the cynical age head-on: human nature is good — and only on that nature can a durable state stand.
In their words — and in plain words
The people are of supreme importance; the altars of state come next; the ruler is light." — Mencius 7B
An open ranking, delivered in the age of kings: the people first, the state second, the ruler last. He goes further — a king who harms the people is no king but "a mere fellow," so killing the tyrants Jie and Zhou was not regicide. The Mandate can be withdrawn: a theory of the right of revolution, 2,300 years early.
A philosophy made by a life
His argument is a famous thought experiment: anyone seeing a child crawl toward a well feels an instant pang — before any calculation of gain or praise. That reflex of compassion, present in all, is the evidence that human nature is good. But it is a sprout, not a finished virtue — it grows with water and sun, dies underfoot. Hence politics matters: without stable livelihood there is no stable heart; welfare is the precondition of morality. Kings busy with wealth and war rejected him as impractical. His book became one of the Four Books — and the weapon Korean scholars drew when confronting their kings. The Ming founder, enraged by "the ruler is light," ordered Mencius expelled from the Confucian temple.
