The age they lived in
The year without a summer: Tambora had erupted in 1815 and ash dimmed the globe, so June on Lake Léman brought rain and cold. Confined indoors, the party agreed each would write a ghost story, and one became Frankenstein. Galvani's frog legs were the talk of Europe — dead muscle twitching under current, and a growing sense that life might not belong to God alone.
In their words — and in plain words
Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus" — the subtitle
The subtitle says everything. Prometheus stole fire for humanity and was punished forever; Victor trespasses on divine ground and makes life. But his crime is not the making.
Read the book and the surprise is that the creature is not monstrous at first. He learns, speaks, reads, and wants to be loved. What makes him a monster is that his creator looked at him and ran. Victor's sin is abandonment, not creation — which is why the novel keeps being summoned into arguments about artificial intelligence.
A philosophy made by a life
Her mother was Mary Wollstonecraft, author of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, who died ten days after giving birth; Mary is said to have read beside her grave. Mother and daughter now stand together on this atlas.
She wrote Frankenstein at eighteen, having already lost a child — a made life failing to survive was not a metaphor to her. The first edition was anonymous and many assumed her husband had written it. She later wrote The Last Man, in which plague erases humanity and one person remains; published in 1826, it was forgotten for over a century.
