Philosophers have only interpreted the world — the point is to change it"
The age they lived in
The century of the Industrial Revolution: factories pouring out unprecedented wealth while the workers who made it lived on fourteen-hour days, child labor, and cholera — plenty and misery issuing from the same machine. A lawyer's son from Trier, trained on Hegel, expelled in turn from Prussia, France, and Belgium for radical journalism, Marx reached London stateless in 1849 and never left. The year before, he and Engels had loosed a pamphlet whose first sentence was already haunting Europe: "A spectre is haunting Europe."
In their words — and in plain words
It is not the consciousness of men that determines their being, but their social being that determines their consciousness." — Preface to A Contribution to the Critique of Political Economy
Ideas do not make the world; how one lives and eats in the world makes one's ideas. Landlord and tenant hear the same word "justice" differently — a matter not of intellect or character but of where they stand. An age's common sense, morality, and religion (his "ideology") grow from its structure of production: to criticize ideas, first examine the soil — the economy — they grew in.
A philosophy made by a life
In London Marx was less a firebrand than a monk of the reading room — thirty years commuting to the British Museum, mining factory inspectors' reports and parliamentary blue books into the mountain that became Capital. Life was wretched: kept afloat by Engels (ironically a factory owner's son and manager), he lost three children to poverty — letters survive of him borrowing for a coffin. Capital's core question is simple: in a market where everything trades "fairly" at its value, where does profit come from? His answer: the gap between the value a worker creates in a day and the price of his labor-power — the wage is earned by mid-morning, the rest of the day is worked free (surplus value). Exploitation not as fraud or exception but as the system working normally. Nor did he merely curse capitalism — he credited its dynamism with "wonders surpassing Egyptian pyramids" while diagnosing its internal contradictions: recurring crises, concentrating wealth. When he died in his study chair in 1883, eleven people attended the funeral. Within a century, a third of the planet lived under systems bearing his name — how far those systems matched his thought became the twentieth century's greatest dispute, where this atlas meets the Politics Atlas. One thing is certain: his question — is your thinking a product of your class? — remains a tool for interrogating every era's common sense, regardless of any regime's fate.
The questions they asked
Do ideas make the world — or the world our ideas?
In a market of fair exchanges, where does profit come from?
What moves history — great individuals, or structures?
Of the beliefs you call common sense — how many were manufactured by where you happen to stand?
