Western Philosophy
1469 ~ 1527 (『군주론』 1513 집필)1469 – 1527 (The Prince written 1513) · 피렌체(산탄드레아)Florence, Sant’Andrea in Percussina
He wrote what is, not what ought to be — separating politics from morality

The age they lived in

The age of the Italian Wars: French and Spanish armies trampling the peninsula, city-states collapsing on hired mercenaries. Machiavelli spent fourteen years as second chancellor of the Florentine Republic at the diplomatic front — observing the French court, the papacy, and Cesare Borgia in person. When the Medici returned in 1512 he was dismissed, implicated in a plot, tortured six times on the strappado, and banished to a country farm. Selling timber and playing cards with peasants by day, he changed into court robes each evening to enter his study and converse with the ancients — and in four months wrote The Prince.

In their words — and in plain words

How one lives is so far removed from how one ought to live that he who abandons what is done for what ought to be done learns his ruin rather than his preservation." — The Prince, ch. 15
Not advice to be wicked but a declaration of method: where political philosophy since Plato asked what the ideal state ought to be, he would observe how power actually works — as a physician describes pathology rather than scolding disease. His uncomfortable finding: in politics good intentions often breed greater catastrophe, and a leader who refuses to dirty his hands can destroy his community. Hence “be both fox and lion” — yet even cruelty he divided into well-used and ill-used, and the end was always the state’s survival, never the prince’s pleasure.

A philosophy made by a life

Read only The Prince and you misread him. In the far bulkier Discourses on Livy, written in the same years, he is plainly a republican: the best regime is not princely but a republic of armed, participating citizens, and Rome was great because it absorbed the conflict between nobles and plebeians into institutions instead of suppressing it — the idea that conflict generates liberty is strikingly original in political thought. Why then dedicate a book to a prince? On the surface, a job application to the Medici (never answered); more deeply, because a divided Italy desperately needed someone to expel the foreign armies. The last chapter breaks from cold analysis into a passionate plea for Italy’s liberation. His name became a curse soon after death: the Index banned him, “Machiavellian” entered every European language as a synonym for treachery, and the English stage devil’s nickname “Old Nick” is said to derive from his given name. Yet modern political science begins with him, as the first to detach politics from theology and morality into an independent field of inquiry. On this map he is the most uncomfortable answerer to “what is the state?” — beside Dangun’s benefit to humanity, Mencius’s people-as-root, Dasan’s origin of power, and Rousseau’s contract, he asks something else: how do those beautiful principles survive in the world where power actually operates?

The questions they asked

Can politics be separated from morality?
Is it justified to dirty one’s hands for a good end?
Does conflict destroy a community — or generate its freedom?
One ideal principle you hold — when real power breaks it, will you keep the principle, or dirty your hands?
