The crowd is untruth" — he asked how to stand before God as a single individual

The age they lived in

Nineteenth-century Denmark: a state-church nation where everyone was born Lutheran — baptized, confirmed, pewed on Sundays. This "automatic Christianity" was his lifelong target. Over European thought loomed Hegel's system, in which all history unfolds absolute spirit and every contradiction is synthesized — and the individual "I" dissolves into a moment of world history. Against the system, a wool merchant's melancholy youngest son raised the existing single individual.

In their words — and in plain words

(1843)"Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards." — Journals, 1843
The answer key to life always arrives late: in hindsight everything explains itself, but at the moment of decision sufficient information is never given — so to live is, essentially, to venture within uncertainty. Compressed here is his counterattack on Hegel: a system may explain history perfectly from behind, but offers nothing to the existing individual who must live forwards.

A philosophy made by a life

In 1841 he broke his engagement to Regine Olsen — while loving her. He never explained (his melancholy, his father's secret, his calling as a writer — speculation abounds), and that inexplicable decision became his philosophy's origin: life's decisive choices cannot be settled by weighing reasons; one can only leap. For fourteen years he wrote furiously — under multiple pseudonyms, each a character living one stage of life (aesthetic, ethical, religious), so that readers are not lectured but maneuvered into choosing among lives themselves: Socratic midwifery turned into a publishing strategy ("indirect communication"). Fear and Trembling takes up Abraham commanded to sacrifice his son — murder by ethics, obedience by faith — the point where universal morality falls silent and the single individual stands alone before God. In his last year he waged a pamphlet war on the state church ("its pastors are civil servants of official Christianity"), collapsed in the street, and died at 42, refusing communion from a state pastor. His vocabulary — existence, anxiety, the leap — was inherited half a century later by Heidegger, Sartre, "Camus": existentialism was named later, but its father is this man of Copenhagen.

The questions they asked

Can life's decisive choices be settled by reasons?
Is faith in a crowd the same as faith alone?
Is anxiety an illness — or the signal of freedom?
The life you are living now — is it the result of a choice, or of never yet having chosen?
