Western Philosophy
Königsberg (modern Kaliningrad)
He never left his hometown — and overturned the world by thought
The age they lived in
The century of Enlightenment: after Newton bound planets and apples in one mathematics, Europe grew confident in reason's omnipotence — until Hume's cold water: causation is only observed habit; necessity is never itself observed. Reading this, Kant wrote that he was "awakened from dogmatic slumber." A harness-maker's son who never really left his Baltic port town, he answered after eleven years of silence with the Critique of Pure Reason.
In their words — and in plain words
Two things fill the mind with ever new and increasing admiration and awe: the starry heavens above me and the moral law within me." — Critique of Practical Reason, conclusion
The map of his whole philosophy. The starry sky: we never see the world raw, only through our mind's own frames — space, time, causality; mind constitutes world, not the reverse ("my Copernican revolution"). The moral law: right and wrong rest neither on divine command nor calculated advantage but on a law reason gives itself — ask only whether your maxim could stand as a law for everyone. In knowledge and in ethics alike, the reference point moves from outside (world, God) into human reason.
A philosophy made by a life
The legend of regularity — townspeople setting watches by his afternoon walk, lifelong bachelorhood, a life within a few dozen kilometers. Yet this most settled of men was famed for his geography lectures, devoured travel books, and filled his dinner table with guests of every trade (philosophy talk banned) — he traveled the world by mind, not body. His three Critiques audit human reason: what it can know (only the experienceable world — God, soul, and cosmos-as-whole admit neither proof nor disproof), what it must do (treat humanity always as an end, never merely as a means), what it may hope. Drawing knowledge's border was not reason's defeat but a double gain — certainty inside the line, humility beyond it: "I had to limit knowledge to make room for faith." His late Perpetual Peace sketched a federation of nations and cosmopolitan right — the UN's blueprint from a Baltic study. His tombstone bears the starry heavens and the moral law.
The questions they asked
Can we see the world as it is in itself?
Does morality rest on God, on advantage — or on reason?
Where are the limits of what reason can know?
That thing you are about to do — would you want a world where everyone, in your situation, did the same?
