이유를 알려주지 않는 권력을 처음으로 그린 사람He drew the first portrait of power that will not tell you why
그가 살았던 시대The age they lived in
Late-Habsburg Prague was a city of nested minorities: a German speaker in a Czech city, and a Jew among the German speakers, belonging fully to none. He worked as a lawyer at the Workers' Accident Insurance Institute, processing industrial injury files daily and watching from inside as people were turned into numbers and clauses.
그의 말, 그리고 쉬운 해설In their words — and in plain words
"어느 날 아침 그레고르 잠자가 불안한 꿈에서 깨어났을 때, 그는 자기가 침대 속에서 한 마리 흉측한 벌레로 변해 있는 것을 발견했다." — 『변신』 첫 문장"One morning, as Gregor Samsa was waking up from anxious dreams, he discovered that in his bed he had been changed into a monstrous verminous bug." — The Metamorphosis, opening line
What is striking is not the insect but the tone. There is no explanation — magic, curse or illness, the book never says. Stranger still is Gregor's own reaction: rather than his body, he worries about missing his train to work.
That is the method. Something impossible happens and nobody treats it as the problem; the ordinary rules simply keep running. The family tends him, comes to see him as a burden, and is relieved when he dies. The frightening thing in the story is not the insect but the family.
삶이 만든 철학A philosophy made by a life
The Trial opens with Josef K. arrested one morning; no one will say what for. The court sits in attics, procedure never ends, and whoever could answer is always one level up. He is executed without ever learning the charge.
It was written in 1914–15, before Stalin's purges and before the Nazi bureaucracy of murder. Kafka drew, as form, what the twentieth century would actually do. Hence the surviving adjective: no stated reason, no counter to appeal to, the responsible official never at their desk.
He was barely known in his lifetime and asked Max Brod to burn everything. Brod published instead — The Trial and The Castle are books their author ordered destroyed. All three of his sisters later died in Nazi camps; he did not live to see it, dying of tuberculosis in 1924.
그가 던진 질문들The questions they asked
- 이유를 알려주지 않는 권력 앞에서, 사람은 무엇을 할 수 있는가?Before a power that will not state its reason, what can a person do?
- 있을 수 없는 일이 일어났는데 일상이 그대로 굴러간다면, 무엇이 무너진 것인가?If the impossible happens and daily life just continues, what has actually broken?
- 저자가 없애라고 한 책을 읽는 우리는 무엇을 하고 있는가?Reading a book its author ordered destroyed — what are we doing?
당신이 이유를 듣지 못한 채 받아들여야 했던 결정은 무엇이었나요? 그때 물어볼 사람은 어디에 있었나요?What decision have you had to accept without being told why? And where was the person you could ask?
이 사람이 놓인 물음The questions this person stands under같은 물음 아래 다른 시대의 사상가들이 함께 서 있습니다 — 3개의 질문에서 이어집니다.Thinkers from other ages stand under the same question — this leads on through 3 questions.
