심리학Psychology
Küsnacht, Lake Zurich
He mapped the unconscious with myth — breaking with his master to descend into his own dark

The age they lived in

A Swiss pastor’s son and a rising psychiatrist at the Burghölzli asylum, Jung wrote to Freud in 1906 and became his “crown prince” — then broke with him six years later, having tried to widen libido from sexual energy into a general psychic energy, which Freud took as betrayal. The rupture threw Jung into a severe crisis: six years of visions and voices, cut off from academic life. Instead of fleeing, he chose to record the abyss.

In their words — and in plain words

Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes." — widely attributed to Jung
Mostly we live behind the face others expect (persona) and project our disowned parts (shadow) onto others — if someone is peculiarly hateful to you, odds are your shadow is on them. Individuation is the lifelong process of meeting that shadow, integrating it, and growing past the socially given ego into the whole (the Self). Where Freud saw the unconscious as a warehouse of the repressed, for Jung it was also a resource for healing and growth.

A philosophy made by a life

Through those six years he recorded his visions in image and text in a red leather volume — The Red Book, withheld by his family for over half a century until 2009. What he found was that his private visions overlapped uncannily with myths, alchemy, and religious symbols worldwide — the seed of the collective unconscious: beneath personal memory lies a shared human layer whose archetypes (shadow, anima/animus, mother, sage, hero) recur in dreams, myths, and art. To test it he traveled to India, Africa, and the Pueblo of New Mexico, and dug deep into Eastern thought, prefacing the I Ching, the Tibetan Book of the Dead, and a Daoist alchemical text — building a bridge between Western psychology and the East. Introversion and extraversion are his, the distant root of today’s MBTI (how much of Jung survives in modern type tests is disputed). The criticisms must be recorded squarely: his theories resist falsification, and his role in the German psychotherapy society during the Nazi years, along with racial and ethnic statements in some writings of that period, remain the heaviest charges against him — errors he later acknowledged. In old age he lived at Bollingen, a tower he built stone by stone on the lakeshore without electricity or running water, carving symbols into rock. If Freud said the ego is not master in its own house, Jung went down to that house’s cellar and drew the map — on this atlas the two stand at Vienna and Zurich, estranged, pointing at the same continent.
