The first to ask whether history has laws — inventor of social science
The age they lived in
Fourteenth-century North Africa: the Black Death sweeping the Mediterranean (it took his parents), Islamic dynasties rising and falling in turn. Born to a distinguished Tunis family, Ibn Khaldūn served as minister and judge in several courts, living at politics’ core, and was repeatedly jailed and exiled by intrigue. At 43, exhausted, he withdrew for four years to a fortress in the Algerian mountains — and there resolved to explain, from what he himself had seen, why dynasties rise and fall so regularly. That introduction is the Muqaddimah.
In their words — and in plain words
Group feeling (‘asabiyyah) founds dynasties; luxury and ease dissolve them." — the dynastic cycle of the Muqaddimah
중요한 건 이 설명 방식이다: 왕조의 멸망을 신의 뜻이나 왕의 부덕이 아니라, 집단 심리와 경제 구조의 작동으로 설명한 것 — 역사를 도덕 교훈집에서 분석 대상으로 옮긴 순간이다.‘Asabiyyah is the binding “we are one” of a group. Harsh environments force tribes to depend on each other, so their cohesion is fierce; with it they conquer cities and found dynasties. Then urban wealth and comfort dissolve that bond over three or four generations — luxury, heavier taxes, reliance on mercenaries, corruption — until a group whose ‘asabiyyah still lives overthrows them: a cycle of roughly 120 years. What matters is the mode of explanation: dynastic collapse accounted for not by divine will or royal vice but by the mechanics of group psychology and economic structure — the moment history moved from moral anthology to object of analysis.
A philosophy made by a life
The Muqaddimah announces its ambition in the preface: he declares the founding of a new science, ‘ilm al-‘umrān, the science of civilization. History then meant chronicles of kings and battles; he dug beneath — the difference between nomadic and settled ways of life, the effects of climate and terrain on people, urban division of labor and markets, how taxation shapes an economy (raise rates and revenue rises at first, then falls as production dies — an analysis twentieth-century economics rediscovered), labor as the source of value, and a methodology for criticizing sources. Arnold Toynbee called it the greatest work of its kind ever created in any time or place, and sociology, demography, economic history, and anthropology each claim him as a forerunner — for anyone taught that sociology began with Comte, this dot in Tunis redraws the family tree. His old age was dramatic: when Timur besieged Damascus in 1401, the 69-year-old was lowered from the walls by rope to meet the conqueror; over weeks of conversation Timur interrogated him on the geography and politics of the Maghreb, while he studied the ruthless conqueror and watched his own theory of ‘asabiyyah performed before his eyes. He died a judge in Cairo. Does history have laws? The man who made that a science 450 years before Hegel and Marx stands here, on this map’s Africa.
