AD 360년경 ~ 415c. AD 360 – 415 · 알렉산드리아Alexandria
The last great woman mathematician of antiquity — where fanaticism murdered knowledge
The age they lived in
Late fourth-century Alexandria, seven centuries the Mediterranean’s intellectual capital, was coming apart: with Christianity as state religion the Serapeum fell in 391, and violence among pagan, Jewish, and Christian communities became routine, while the prefect Orestes and the patriarch Cyril tore the city between them. At its center stood Hypatia, daughter of the mathematician Theon — heading the Neoplatonist school after him, the city’s foremost teacher, taking students regardless of creed.
In their words — and in plain words
To teach superstition as truth is a most terrible thing." — widely attributed to Hypatia (no writings of hers survive)
That the attribution is uncertain is itself her tragedy: not one of her writings survives. We know her through her student Synesius’s letters and later historians — and we know what she taught: commentaries on Apollonius’s conics, Diophantus’s algebra, and Ptolemy’s astronomy, and the construction of astrolabes. Standing against the insistence that the unverifiable is true: that was her post, as mathematician and philosopher alike.
A philosophy made by a life
The record says she surpassed her father as a scholar, lectured publicly in the philosopher’s cloak, and drove her own chariot through the city; that the prefect and other leading men sought her counsel, and that Christians studied under her — Synesius, who became a bishop, called her lifelong “mother, sister, teacher.” One day in Lent, 415, she was dragged from her chariot into a church and killed by a mob; the sources say her flesh was scraped with potsherds and her body burned. She died not for her ideas but for politics: in the struggle between prefect and patriarch, she was marked as the prefect’s influential ally. Historians often summon her death as the symbol of antiquity’s intellectual end — an oversimplification: Alexandrian scholarship continued, and great scholars arose within Christianity (Augustine of Hippo was her contemporary). Yet with every caution entered, a fact remains: a woman who taught the verifiable was torn apart by a crowd gripped by the unverifiable — and after her, more than a thousand years passed before a woman of comparable standing appeared again in the West. In this atlas’s medieval map she stands with Hildegard and Murasaki; the seven-century gap between those three women is the measure of the stories never told.
The questions they asked
May we teach as truth what cannot be verified?
Why does knowledge become a target of violence?
Where did the thought of the unrecorded go?
Among your certainties — can you tell apart what you have verified from what you have simply decided to believe?
