The cheerful skeptic — reason is the slave of the passions, and causation a habit

The age they lived in

Edinburgh, heart of the Scottish Enlightenment — Adam Smith, geologists, physicians, and lawyers arguing in clubs and taverns; per capita the most intellectual city on earth. Hume was its cheerful bachelor. His Treatise, finished at 26, “fell dead-born from the press” (his phrase), but its bombs detonated slowly. Twice denied professorships as a reputed atheist, he lived as librarian, diplomat, and essayist — famous in his day less as a philosopher than as the bestselling historian of England.

In their words — and in plain words

Reason is, and ought only to be, the slave of the passions." — A Treatise of Human Nature
A frontal inversion of Western philosophy’s official hierarchy since Plato — reason the charioteer, passion the horses. Reason cannot set destinations: what we want (to save a life, to see justice) is set by passion; reason only computes the route. So too morality: murder is wrong not because it is a logical contradiction but because our breast revolts — its root is sympathy, not inference. Modern moral psychology’s experiments largely take his side.

A philosophy made by a life

His causation analysis is among philosophy’s most destructive pages. Ball A strikes B; B rolls — we say A “made” B move. But what did we observe? Contact, then motion. The productive power itself appears nowhere — not in a thousand viewings. Causation is not the cement of the world but a habit of expectation formed in a mind that has undergone repetition (al-Ghazali had probed the same spot 700 years earlier — concluding in God’s direct agency where Hume concluded in psychology). Even tomorrow’s sunrise is habit, not demonstration — the bomb later named the problem of induction, the one that woke Kant from dogmatic slumber. Hume himself wrote that when skepticism darkened his mood, dinner and backgammon with friends made it look ridiculous — philosophical doubt and cheerful living, coexisting, was his answer. Called “the Great Infidel” for his critique of miracles and religion, his deathbed became Edinburgh’s question: how does an atheist die? To the visiting Boswell he joked that annihilation held no terror — no different from not having existed before birth. The calm of that death became his final argument. Adam Smith’s eulogy: as near to a perfectly wise and virtuous man “as the nature of human frailty will permit.”

The questions they asked

Which moves us — reason, or feeling?
Have you ever seen a cause “produce” its effect?
How do we know the sun will rise tomorrow?
Recall your most rational decision — was it really reason that set the destination, or some desire?
