The poet who used gods to talk about humans

The age they lived in

Greece emerging from its Dark Age, relearning writing with the Phoenician alphabet. Whether Homer was one man or generations of bards under one name is still debated — what is certain is that these epics became the textbook and scripture of the Greeks.

In their words — and in plain words

The gods spin ruin for mortals, so that there may be song for those to come." — after Odyssey, Book 8
Why do we suffer? Homer's answer is, surprisingly, a theory of art: so that suffering may become song. Humans give pain its meaning through story — poetry was doing what philosophy would later do with concepts.

A philosophy made by a life

The Iliad is not about the gods' war — it is about Achilles, who returns to battle knowing he will die. Its climax is not combat but a night when old king Priam kneels before his son's killer, and the two enemies weep together. The gods, deathless, can have no such scene. Mortality is what makes humans serious — the inheritance Greek tragedy and philosophy would claim.

The questions they asked

Can suffering have meaning?
Is mortality a curse — or a condition?
Is it folly to risk life for honor?
If your life became a song — which scene would be its climax?
