He reopened the question of Being — and joined the Nazis. Both facts are him

The age they lived in

The anxiety and collapse of Weimar — German intellectual life steeped in disillusion with technology and mass society. A sexton’s son from the Black Forest who moved from theology to philosophy, Heidegger inherited Husserl’s phenomenology and shook European philosophy in 1927 with Being and Time, written in his mountain hut. And in 1933 he became rector of Freiburg University — and joined the Nazi Party.

In their words — and in plain words

— 『존재와 시간』의 죽음 분석 (요지)"Running ahead toward death, Dasein first stands before its ownmost possibility of being." — the analysis of death in Being and Time
It sounds grim; the structure is this. Mostly we live as “the They” lives — doing what one does, saying what one says, filing death away as something that happens to everyone someday. But death alone is the one thing no one can do in my place: faced squarely, in advance, it breaks the anesthesia of “like everyone else” and returns this life as irreplaceably mine. The same ground as Daseok’s one-day-one-life and Aurelius’s memento mori — reached by an analysis of the structure of existence.

A philosophy made by a life

The opening question of Being and Time is simple and vast: we say “is” constantly, yet have forgotten to ask what Being itself means. He renames the human “Dasein” — the one being for whom its own being is at issue; not a Cartesian observer outside the world but always already being-in-the-world, wielding tools, entangled with others. The analysis fed existentialism, hermeneutics, theology, architecture, ecological thought — to call half of twentieth-century philosophy its tributary is barely exaggeration. But 1933 is a fact: his rectoral address aligned the university with the Nazi movement; he was silent as his Jewish teacher Husserl was excluded; he resigned the rectorate within a year but kept his party card to the end, and after the war never explicitly apologized for the Holocaust. The posthumous Black Notebooks, with their antisemitic passages, reignited the dispute. This map does not footnote the fact: the “thoughtlessness” Arendt — his student and lover, later uneasily reconciled — diagnosed in Eichmann afflicted the very philosopher who thought Being most deeply. He stands here as the century’s most painful proof that depth of thought guarantees neither political judgment nor moral courage. His postwar turn was a critique of technology: its essence is no mere tool but a way of revealing the world as stock — rivers become hydropower, forests timber, humans “human resources.” Read that diagnosis, newly summoned in the age of AI, while remembering who wrote it: that is the stance this card asks of its reader.

The questions they asked

What does “to be” mean — and why did we forget to ask?
How does facing death change life?
Why does deep thinking fail to guarantee moral judgment?
