The age they lived in

A wheelwright’s son. He left home at six to live with relatives, entered the choir of St Stephen’s in Vienna at eight, and was turned out at seventeen when his voice broke, spending several hungry years playing serenades in the street. At twenty-nine he entered the Esterházy household — his contract specified livery and standing in an appointed place before meals; his rank was that of a servant. For nearly thirty years he had an orchestra at his disposal, free to write something each week, hear it at once and revise. Released after his patron died, he crossed to London twice in his sixties to great success and took an honorary doctorate at Oxford.

In their words — and in plain words

Cut off from the world, I was forced to become original." — reported by his biographer
The sentence reframes isolation as a condition. He was tied for nearly thirty years to a country palace in Hungary, unable to follow the fashions of Vienna and with few chances to hear other composers’ new work. Ordinarily that is deprivation. But he had something else: a standing orchestra to experiment on and the time to check the result every week. In exchange for not seeing what others did, he could keep testing his own. The 106 symphonies and sixty-eight quartets are the product of those thirty years. He is called the father of the symphony not for inventing it but for rebuilding the same form more than a hundred times until a standard emerged. A place where repetition was possible came before genius.

A philosophy made by a life

One anecdote shows his position exactly: the Farewell Symphony. In 1772 the patron kept extending the summer stay and the players had not seen their families. Instead of complaining, Haydn wrote a piece. In the last movement the musicians finish their parts one by one, blow out their candles and leave, until only two violins remain and it ends quietly. The prince is said to have taken the point and ordered the court home the next day. A petition delivered as music. A man of servant rank made a demand in the language of his own work, and it worked. His players called him Papa Haydn for more than his good temper. He and Mozart, twenty-four years apart, admired each other: Mozart dedicated six quartets to him, and Haydn told Mozart’s father that his son was the greatest composer he knew. Beethoven studied with him too.
