The age they lived in

A surgeon’s son from Halle, said to have hidden a clavichord in the attic because his father forbade music. He abandoned law for the Hamburg opera orchestra, learned opera in Italy, then crossed to London and became a British subject. He was a businessman: renting theatres, hiring star singers, selling tickets. Two rival sopranos once came to blows on stage; a competing company split the audience and the whole Italian opera business collapsed under him. That is when he turned to English oratorio. He went blind late in life and went on playing the organ and directing Messiah after losing his sight. He is buried in Westminster Abbey.

In their words — and in plain words

The autograph of Messiah — begun 22 August 1741, finished 14 September
Twenty-four days, for three parts, fifty-three numbers, 354 pages. What matters is his position at the time. His opera business had collapsed and he was recovering from a stroke, near bankruptcy, when a Dublin charity commissioned a new work and his patron Charles Jennens handed him a libretto stitched from scripture. His servant testified that he forgot to eat and wept as he wrote. The premiere was in Dublin on 13 April 1742. It sold out, and ladies were asked to leave their hoops and gentlemen their swords at home to fit more people in. He went on giving the work in charity performances for hospitals and the foundling home.

A philosophy made by a life

In Korea and Japan he is called the mother of music. The West does not use it, and the awkwardness of giving a male composer that title has been noted in Korea too. It was built as a matching pair after father was given to Bach, born the same year. But the reason for the pairing is accurate. They were opposites. Bach never left Germany, lived as a church employee, and wrote chiefly sacred music. Handel went by way of Italy and became British, ran theatres and sold tickets, and faced a paying public with operas and oratorios. Strictness against splendour; digging inward against spreading outward. They never met. The story goes that Bach tried whenever Handel visited Halle and always missed him. Both went blind at the end, and both are recorded as having been operated on by the same English oculist, John Taylor — though for Handel the evidence is described as thin.
