Only a thinking people survives" — philosopher of the ssial, Korea's Gandhi
The age they lived in
A life that passed through all of modern Korea's ordeals: born in the northwest, expelled from school for the 1919 independence movement at 18, taught by Yu Yong-mo at Osan School, jailed under Japanese rule, jailed again by the Soviet military in the North, and after fleeing south, imprisoned in turn for defying the Rhee, Park, and Chun dictatorships. Colonial rule, division, dictatorship — every power caged him; none stopped his pen. Quaker faith, Daoism, and the Bible fused in one unclassifiable thinker.
In their words — and in plain words
Only a thinking people can live." — title of his August 1958 essay in Sasanggye
This essay, asking what the Korean War revealed, got him jailed under the National Security Act — a piece urging Koreans to face their own thoughtlessness rather than blame others became, by its punishment, the proof of its title. His root concept is the ssial: a coined pure-Korean word for the common people, literally the kernel of a seed. History's owner is neither king nor hero nor intelligentsia but the nameless seeds that sprout again however trampled — and the seed's one way of being a seed is to think for itself. The danger Arendt saw in Eichmann's thoughtlessness, he was diagnosing in the same years at the scale of a nation.
A philosophy made by a life
His masterwork, Korean History Seen Through Meaning, was written between prisons and rented rooms — a philosophy of history that faces Korea's past as a chain of suffering, then boldly inverts it: not shame but vocation, a nation "carrying the burden of world history," and therefore entitled to offer the world a philosophy of peace and the ssial. Trained by his teacher Yu Yong-mo in the classics, he reread Laozi and Zhuangzi through the seed-people's eyes ("without Zhuangzi one cannot escape servitude"), and found in Quaker silence a faith beyond institutional religion. Gandhi was his lifelong exemplar — nonviolence as soul-force, translated into Korean and lived: through the 1960 uprising, the Yushin dictatorship, and after Gwangju, the old man in the white durumagi stood at the front of declarations, fasted, was dragged away. He was twice nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Calling himself a "man of the wilds," he belonged to no party, no denomination, no office — a lifelong post outside power, interrogating power. The journal he published almost to his death in 1989 summarizes the whole: Voice of the Ssial. Seeds finding their voice — nameless people thinking and speaking for themselves — was, for him, the completion of both history and philosophy.
The questions they asked
Who owns history — heroes, or the seed-people?
Is a history of suffering a shame — or a calling?
What does it demand of us to become a thinking people?
Right now — are you a seed thinking for itself, or waiting for someone to think in your place?
