Religious Thought
Babylon
The first time "justice" was carved in stone

The age they lived in

Hammurabi turned the small city of Babylon into the master of Mesopotamia. On a black stone stele, 282 laws — handed to the king by the sun god Shamash. Law as divine order, not royal whim.

In their words — and in plain words

That the strong might not oppress the weak, that justice be done to the orphan and the widow, that justice shine upon the land." — Prologue to the Code
An eye for an eye" was not a license for revenge but a ceiling on it — you may not take a life for an eye. In an age of endless vendetta, the revolution was drawing a line: this far, no further.

A philosophy made by a life

The stele itself was looted 500 years later, found broken in 1901, and now stands in the Louvre. Inside it, penalties differed by class — a noble's eye cost more than a commoner's. Declaring justice and achieving it: the gap remains our homework, four thousand years on.

The questions they asked

What is justice?
Where does law get its authority — gods, force, or consent?
What separates punishment from revenge?
When the law and justice part ways — which side do you take?
The questions this person stands under

Thinkers from other ages stand under the same question — this leads on through 2 questions.
