Religious Thought
Ahmedabad, Sabarmati Ashram
He experimented with truth — nonviolence not as the weak's escape but the strong's weapon

The age they lived in

The British Empire at its height: India the "jewel in the crown," three hundred million ruled by a handful of officials and soldiers, armed revolts crushed one after another. The London-trained lawyer's turning point came in South Africa — thrown off a train, first-class ticket in hand, for not being white. On that platform he began working out a third way, neither vengeance nor submission. When he returned to India in 1915 with a method forged over 21 South African years, he was already called Mahatma.

In their words — and in plain words

My life is my message." — Gandhi
His answer when a reporter asked for a message. The core of his thought is inside it: truth is not asserted but lived — hence his autobiography's title, The Story of My Experiments with Truth. Vegetarianism, non-possession, the spinning wheel, fasting, "nonviolence": not doctrines but experiments run on his own body. Satyagraha — "holding fast to truth" — is the experiment's political form: disobey the unjust law, and willingly pay its price. A way of fighting that aims not at the opponent's body but at his conscience.

A philosophy made by a life

The 1930 Salt March distills the method. Britain monopolized and taxed salt — a tax not even the poorest could evade. At 61, Gandhi walked 380-odd kilometers in 24 days with 78 companions to the beach at Dandi, and picked up a handful of salt from the flats: a crime. The nation followed; sixty thousand were jailed; marchers fell under batons without raising a fist — and as the scene went out over the wires, the empire's moral authority collapsed. Yet his story is no hagiography, and he kept the record of failure himself: he halted a movement that turned violent (Chauri Chaura); Ambedkar scathed his stance on caste; his early racial attitudes in South Africa were not those of his later years. "Experiments" was the honest word — experiments include failures. Independence in 1947 came in the form he most feared — partition and massacre — and he spent it fasting and walking the killing grounds instead of celebrating. In January 1948 a Hindu extremist shot him for being too conciliatory to Muslims: the apostle of nonviolence felled by violence. But the results of his experiments crossed borders — to King's Montgomery, Mandela's South Africa, and Korea's Ham Sok-hon.
