Love is an art, not a feeling" — he diagnosed why humans flee their own freedom
The age they lived in
Raised Orthodox Jewish in Frankfurt, Fromm became a scholar carrying two riddles: the "rational" adults who marched euphorically to die in WWI, and then civilized Germany voting Hitler in of its own free will. A psychoanalyst and sociologist, he fled to America in 1933 and fused Freud's unconscious with Marx's social structure to ask: how does not a person but a whole society fall psychologically ill?
In their words — and in plain words
Immature love says: I love you because I need you. Mature love says: I need you because I love you." — The Art of Loving
The order is reversed: clutching someone out of loneliness and lack is not love but a transaction of deficits — love is a person already able to stand alone, walking toward another. Hence the title's "art": love is not an accident one falls into but a capacity one learns and practices — care, responsibility, respect, knowledge, mastered like carpentry. The book aims at our paradox: a lifetime spent searching for someone to be loved by, and not one day spent building the capacity to love.
A philosophy made by a life
Escape from Freedom (1941) answers his two riddles. Modernity freed humans — but it was freedom from: as estate, church, and community loosened, what remained was an anxious individual competing alone in a vast market. Faced with unbearable isolation, people flee through three exits: submission to the strong (authoritarianism), domination or destruction to erase helplessness, and becoming indistinguishable from everyone else (automaton conformity). Nazism, on this diagnosis, was not the madness of monsters but the mass organization of ordinary people's flight from freedom — which is why the book is reread whenever authoritarianism stirs. His later work turned to prescription: beyond freedom-from to freedom-to, whose central practice is love (The Art of Loving became a worldwide perennial), and finally To Have or To Be summarized the modern illness as a question of mode: having (more — even knowledge and love as possessions) versus being (experiencing, sharing, becoming). One who has knowledge differs from one who thinks; one who would have love differs from one who loves. He died in 1980 — but in an age where algorithms sell isolation and having stands in for being, his diagnosis has not expired.
Where to start — a suggested order
- 『사랑의 기술』The Art of Loving 1956제일 얇고 제일 잘 읽힌다. The thinnest and the easiest to read. His whole view — love not as something you fall into but as an art you learn — is in here, which is why first-time readers are usually pointed to this book first.
His central work and the backbone of the rest. It asks why people give up freedom and submit to a strong leader. If The Art of Loving is the prescription, this book is the diagnosis.
To Have or to Be? 1976말년의 결론. His late conclusion. It separates a life of having from a life of being and sums up the sickness of modern people. Read after the first two, its sentences feel much lighter.
The fullest version of his diagnosis that a whole society, not just a person, can fall ill. From here on, go only if you are curious.
- 『인간의 마음』The Heart of Man 1964사람 안의 파괴성과 생명애를 다룬다. On the destructive urge and the love of life inside people. It reads as the sequel to Escape from Freedom.
