He dug up the pedigrees of the obvious — power does not forbid; it produces
The age they lived in
France around 1968: the age of grand theories waning, and the “margins” — the mad, the imprisoned, the patient, the queer — entering the center of politics. Foucault lived those margins himself: a gay man sick with youth in repressive postwar France (there were suicide attempts), moving between psychology and philosophy, working in asylums. He converted the existential question “why am I classified abnormal?” into the historical one: who drew the border between normal and abnormal, when, and how? Every book of his is a variation on it.
In their words — and in plain words
— 푸코의 권력 분석 (요지)"If power were only repressive, do you really think we would obey it? Power produces — things, pleasures, knowledge, discourses." — Foucault’s analysis of power
Stop looking for power in thrones and gun barrels. Modern power works not by forbidding but by manufacturing: schools produce “the student” through timetables and exams, medicine produces “the normal” through diagnosis, statistics produce “the average man.” We obey not because we are crushed but because we adopt the identities and standards power has made for us. Hence his prescription is not one grand revolution but genealogy — digging up the pedigrees of what we take ourselves to be. The moment you find the manufacture date on an “obvious” truth, it becomes changeable.
A philosophy made by a life
His books are all histories of things you did not know had histories. Madness and Civilization: how the mad, once mingled in the town, became at a certain moment “beings to confine.” Discipline and Punish: the shift from body-rending public execution to soul-correcting prison was not humanitarian progress but a change of power’s technology. Its emblem is Bentham’s Panopticon — a circular prison where the central tower sees every cell but no prisoner knows when he is watched, so each watches himself. Foucault’s diagnosis: the structure leapt the prison wall into schools, factories, hospitals, offices — a disciplinary society entire (no explanation needed for why the analysis is summoned again in the age of CCTV and social media). The History of Sexuality inverts the cliché: far from silencing sex, modernity made us confess, classify, and speak of it endlessly. Nor was he a study-bound scholar — he founded the Prisons Information Group so inmates could speak for themselves (“not to speak for them, but to make their speech heard”), and stood with movements from Tunisia to Solidarity. At the Collège de France, his chair was “the history of systems of thought,” and to packed halls he defined philosophy’s task: not to justify what we already know, but to learn how it is possible to think differently. He died of AIDS in 1984, while the disease still carried its stigma. In his last years he was returning to the ancient arts of the “care of the self”: the man who dissected the self that power makes asked, at the end, how one might craft oneself — existence as a work of art. That unfinished question is the baton this map passes to its reader.
The questions they asked
Who drew the border between normal and abnormal?
Since when have we watched ourselves?
How is it possible to think differently?
Pick one “that is just how it is” you have always believed, and dig up its pedigree — what would its manufacture date turn out to be?
