Philosophy of Science
Princeton, New Jersey
He doubted the foundations of the house he built — God does not play dice

The age they lived in

Around 1900 physics looked nearly finished: Newton and Maxwell seemed to cover heaven and earth. The man who brought the building down was a patent clerk. In 1905 alone he showed that light behaves as grains (the light quantum) and that time and space are not absolute (special relativity). But the quantum mechanics that grew from his own seed returned in a form he could not accept — a world speakable only in probabilities. To the end he held that this was the theory’s incompleteness, not the world’s.

In their words — and in plain words

(1926)"Quantum mechanics is certainly imposing. But an inner voice tells me that it is not yet the real thing. … I, at any rate, am convinced that He does not throw dice." — letter to Max Born, 1926
Probability, he insisted, must be a defect of our knowledge, not a property of the world. A die looks random because we do not know the initial conditions — not because the die itself is undecided. He hoped the quantum probabilities were like that: a deeper, not-yet-found level where everything is fixed. One caution: the "God" here is not personal. He said repeatedly that he believed in Spinoza’s God — the order of nature itself. The sentence is not a confession of faith but a trust in lawfulness.
Physics should live without spooky action at a distance." — to Born, 1947, on entanglement
In 1935, with two colleagues, he published what became known as EPR: if measuring one entangled particle fixes the other at any distance, is something not wrong here? — a precise objection. The ending is instructive. In 1964 Bell turned the objection into something testable, and the tests sided with quantum mechanics. Einstein was wrong — but the tests existed because he had made the problem exact. A well-lost argument moved science as far as a won one; the 2022 Nobel Prize went to the experimenters.

A philosophy made by a life

He was not an opponent of quantum mechanics but one of its founders — his 1921 Nobel was for the light quantum, not relativity. The trouble began when the theory grew into the Copenhagen reading: no definite values before measurement, probability at the bottom of the world. At the 1927 Solvay conference he fired thought experiments at Bohr one by one, and Bohr answered them one by one — objection at breakfast, reply by dinner, as attendees recalled. The 1935 EPR paper was the summit of that argument. He died unpersuaded in 1955; Bell’s theorem and the experiments that followed showed that the local realism he defended gives way. Yet the field that questions the foundations of quantum mechanics — down to today’s quantum information science — stands largely on his objections. He spent his last years chasing a unified field theory at Princeton, calculating to the end, sure of one thing: that the world can be understood. "The most incomprehensible thing about the world is that it is comprehensible."

The questions they asked

Can the world be spoken of only in probabilities?
Is the moon there when nobody looks?
Is a well-lost argument worth less than a won one?
Is what happens at the same time the same time for everyone?
A conclusion you have never been able to accept — what is that refusal building right now?
