The age they lived in

Born near Prague, son of a butcher and innkeeper who wanted him to take over the trade. He was unknown for a long time, earning his living as a viola player in a Prague theatre orchestra — where he saw Wagner conduct in person. Brahms was the turning point: judging applications for an Austrian state stipend, he was struck by Dvořák’s scores and introduced him to his own publisher, and the resulting Slavonic Dances sold enormously. The two remained friends for life. Invited to head a conservatory in New York, he spent three years there, was homesick throughout, and broke his contract to go home. He loved trains and would go to the station to write down locomotive numbers.

In their words — and in plain words

The future music of this country must be founded on what are called the negro melodies." — New York Herald, 1893
A composer from Europe telling Americans not to imitate Europe. It was bold for the time and it caused argument. He did not only say it. He learned spirituals from Harry Burleigh, the Black singer who was his assistant and student, and they went into the New World Symphony — the cor anglais melody of the slow movement is the result. What followed is the interesting part: a pupil of his fitted words to that melody as the song Goin’ Home. The direction runs the opposite way from what people assume. The root of the claim is that he was Czech. Under Austrian rule he knew what it meant to write your own country’s sound.

A philosophy made by a life

His movement is called the national schools. Until the nineteenth century the centre of classical music was Germany and Italy, and composers elsewhere learned and followed that style. In the later part of the century, composers in Bohemia, Russia, Norway, Finland and Spain began bringing their own folk songs, dances and speech rhythms into their work. It is hard to separate from politics. It mostly arose in countries under foreign rule or on the verge of unification, where music was itself a claim about identity. Sibelius’s Finlandia was banned under Russian rule. What is distinctive about Dvořák is that he handed the idea to another country. He did not only use his own folk material; he went to America and told Americans to use theirs. The New World Symphony travelled to the moon on Apollo 11 in 1969, among the recordings Armstrong took. A piece written by a man far from home, longing for it, went along on the furthest journey humanity has made.
